PERSONALITY
wu chang is their collective name; they're known as the white guard xie bi'an, and the black guard fan wujiu.the white guard bears a more calm and composed personality, shrouded in mystery at times where his gentle smile does not make one feel safe. they are, after all, a 'hunter' — and despite all that has happened in their past, xie bi'an does quite the justice to his new position. he is the sociable of the pair, happy to speak with others (hunters and survivors alike) and happy to even give advice*, whether requested or not. (*said advice might not always be the most positive one, however.) to some, he might even be something akin to an older brother figure — wise, reliable and most certainly dependable —, but through all of his wisdom and kindness, he is much like a fleeting dream. no matter how close one attempts to get of him, bi'an never feels like he is at an approachable distance.
as a hunter, he takes his position seriously; as soft-spoken as the white guard might be, he chases after those he is meant to "kill" and spares them not. if he must bleed out the survivors for a chance to win, then he will — regardless whether they have talked just prior the match or not. once the game starts, they're naught but four survivors and one hunter. ... and yet, despite all, xie bi'an hides sins and emotions that make him much sensitive, at times.
in regards to himself, he is rather gloom. he no longer believes he deserves to be loved, no longer believes he even deserves to be given compliments, either — he has to atone for his sins, after all. it is a side of him that while he does not entirely hide from others, it is not often brought to surface. xie bi'an is hardly the kind to ask for pity, for he does not think he even deserves it. his existence is stained in sins and regret, grudges and despair, and perhaps the suffering that comes with no longer being able to see the one he loved the most is a rightful punishment.
through all of his beauty and gentleness, it certainly makes him a rather melancholic existence.
the black guard is a stark opposite, being more silent and closed off than the white guard. while it could be said xie bi'an is emotionally sensitive, fan wujiu keeps his emotions to himself as much as he can. he certainly behaves more 'maturely', if only because he is not nearly as social. while xie bi'an is the one who has an easier time with crowds, fan wujiu would rather have personal conversations in quietude with another. his straightforward nature is hardly the most welcoming, his words many times coming off as cold, distant and perhaps even rude. he is something like a lone wolf, after all, an unapproachable existence that is just as fleeting as his counterpart — if not more so.
when he is the one hunting, the black guard could even be considered an "angry dog". while xie bi'an excels in movement speed, fan wujiu exceeds in melee combat, thus making him be the one designed to "kill" — while definitely not making light of how fearsome his counterpart can be. and still, even then, he is also one to hide his deepest emotions towards the tragic past he shares with his friend.
'he hides his sadness and pain within his darkness' — is how his stage play actor describes the hidden suffering inside his heart. just like xie bi'an, fan wujiu also does not believe he deserves love and compliments, but he does not assume he should be punished for it; as long as others don't interfere in his pain, as long as they don't worry about it, he doesn't care. it is something he has accepted as part of him, something that isolates him even more from those around him. they're both naturally pessimistic people, but while the white guard voices his pessimistic opinions much louder, the black guard keeps them in, unless prompted out.
just like black and white, they are opposites that complement each other, thus likely being the reason they fit together so well. one has what the other lacks, and the balance that comes when both are together is what creates 'wu chang' — an existence hidden in mystery and melancholy that relies on each part that makes them what they are. they are now bound to be together for all of eternity, never being able to see each other again, but never to be alone.

HISTORY
once upon a time, there were two friends by the name of xie bi'an and fan wujiu. they were sworn brothers, with a friendship worth of envious looks from others. they were said to work at a yamen (an administrative office) as yamen runners, who often serve as guards, door-keepers, messenger, policemen, among others. one day, a rumor was brought up, accusing both men of injuring a governor's son at a tavern. xie bi'an and fan wujiu were both very protective of each other, and despite both being innocent, the governor had asked the county government to resolve the issue within ten days — hasty decisions then being necessary.first confession: xie bi'an confessed to assault at the tavern and that no one else was involved.in spite of the accusations, they were still assigned the duty to apprehend a fugitive together. it gave them time to meet up at nantai bridge to discuss the assault incident together, which fan wujiu wrote a letter to xie bi'an to meet him there. bi'an, however, after successfully arresting the fugitive by himself, decided to use this opportunity to tell the 'truth' — in regards to the assault incident, he chose to make himself the only 'guilty' party. wujiu, on the other hand, knew that the governor cared not for the 'truth'; he only wished to make someone pay.
second confession: fan wujiu confessed to assault at the tavern and that no one else was involved.a case summary: yamen runner fan wujiu is guilty of assault at a tavern, but before the case could be completed, he drowned under nantai bridge during a storm. the case of assault has therefore been concluded.xie bi'an, upon hearing the news of his friend's passing, could not bear the loneliness of a life without him, and thus chose to commit suicide — perhaps an attempt to repent for his own sins. their souls were stored inside a mysterious umbrella that made its way to oletus manor, and though they were given physical bodies again, it is a single body that they must share; never again being able to see each other.
